Published in October 1911., Timmy Tiptoes is an American Grey Squirrel. The book marks Potter’s first attempt to write about and draw “foreign” animals.
Timmy’s neighbours believe he has stolen their nuts. So they shut him in a hollow tree to confess. Chippy Hackee, a feckless chipmunk, encourages Timmy to eat the nuts stored in the tree. When he does Timmy becomes fat and cannot escape. till a storm frees him.
The book sold well at first, but is now seen as one of Potter’s less successful, perhaps by now Potter was losing interest in writing for children, or the desire to exploit the lucrative American market somehow dampened her creativity.
