The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin (1903)

St-Herbert's IslandThe Tale of Squirrel Nutkin centres on a cheeky young red squirrel called Nutkin. Nutkin is very rude to an owl (Old Brown) and only just escapes.

The book was an instant hit, published quickly to capitalise on the success of Peter Rabbit. Like the first book Squirrel Nutkin was also written for a child of Beatrix Potter’s former governess, Annie Carter Moore. this time as a story and picture letter for her daughter Norah Moore.

The background scenery was based on Derwentwater and St. Herbert’s Island in the Lake District.
