Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, and conservationist (she first became known for her illustrations and other work on fungi). She is now best known for her delightfully illustrated children’s books.  She painted and drew the pictures for these as well as composing the stories. They all feature animals that act like humans and give a charming picture of the landscape and life of the English countryside at the turn of the 20th century.

With the proceeds from sales of her wildly successful books she bought several hill farms in the Lake District to preserve them, on her death she left them to the National Trust

Her stories sometimes seem gruesome to modern parents, but children of her time were used to the idea that meat comes from dead animals and not pre-packed in supermarkets.
