Mrs Tiggy-Winkle is a hedgehog who is a washerwoman (a woman who makes her living operating a laundry service from her home). Her cottage is set the fells around Newlands Valley in the Lake District. Mrs Tiggy-Winkle invites a girl called Lucie for tea, and she helps Mrs Tiggy-Winkle deliver the washing to the animals and birds.

A Scottish washerwoman, Kitty MacDonald, was the inspiration for Mrs Tiggy-Winkle ,in the story, but her name came from Beatrix Potter’s pet hedgehog. Lucie was also based on life, as Beatrix Potter knew Lucie Carr, the daughter of the vicar of Newlands (the church is obscured by the title in the photo above),
